In response to Big is Not Always Better posted by Carol331:

When I am selecting a book, the first thing I seem to zero in on are my favorite authors. Their names always 'jump' off those bookstore shelves. If I don't see an author I'm familiar with, the next thing I look for is a cover that grabs my attention. If the cover grabs me, I'll pick up the book. Even if I've never heard of that author, if the back text sounds intriguing, I'll then buy the book.

I am also an author, so I place a huge emphasis on my covers. Most people seem to select a book the same way as I do. Very few even ask who the publisher is...most don't care. Covers, authors' names and story content are what grabs them. I have licensed a painting by a famous artist, designed my own and even had my 15-year-old daughter design the cover of The River, which receives a ton of praise at every signing. My new release Whale Song has a cover by award winning graphic artist Kam Wai Yu, and although I am proud of my publisher (Kunati Inc. Book Publishers), in the end the consumers will be looking for a good read.
